You'll probably find this video - Make your old iPhone run like new - by Donald Bell very useful.  It has some tips and tricks to clean up your iPhone and make your life a little easier.  You know that game that was FREE and looked really fun in the App Store.... had to connect to a WiFi network to download it.... yeaaaaaah, you never play that, do you?  By deleting that huge, space-sucking game off your phone, you can make it run a little faster.

Google Sets Internet Record with 25 Percent of U.S. Traffic

According to the article Google sets Internet record with 25 percent of U.S. traffic on CNET, 25 percent of North America's consumer web traffic travels through Google's servers.  This is up from just 6 percent of Internet traffic in 2010, the last time the study was done by Internet monitoring firm Deepfield.  60 percent of all Internet end devices/users exchange traffic with Google servers during the course of an average day.  That makes Google bigger than Facebook, Netflix and Twitter combined!

Of course, you may just want to visit Google to see if there's a fun doodle for the day.  Yesterday, Google honored the would-be 93rd birthday of biophysicist Rosalind Franklin.  Her research in X-ray crystallography was essential to the discovery of the structure of human DNA, but unfortunately, she died before she could even be nominated for the Nobel Prize.

I started reading about Google doodles on their website, and the history is interesting.... In 1998, the Google founders, Larry and Sergey, placed a stick person behind one of the logo's O's.  They did it as a funny "out of office" message for Google users, while they were attending the Burning Man festival.  Now there is a whole team of Google Doodlers, and they have created over 1,000 doodles around the world!  You can see them all here!

New Technology Helps Scientists Study 17-Year Cicadas

Cicadas.... These interesting insects sleep and feed underground and then only emerge once every 17 years!  When they do come above ground, they're nearly impossible to miss in parts of the United States.  You'll hear their buzzing mating call filling the air, or they may shed their exoskeletons all over your yard.  They are so ubiquitous during their few weeks above ground, that they trend on Twitter with the hashtag #swarmageddon.

After studying cicadas with pens and paper maps for decades, this time, scientists can use smart phones and GPS.  Advances in technology have been greatly benefiting University of Connecticut entomologist John Cooley's 17-year cicada studies.  The article Cicada Spawn Tracked by Scientists Armed with Technology on Bloomberg mentions his study of Brood II cicadas (Magicicada septendecim), which are an East coast group whose last emergence was in 1996.  In the article, John Cooley talks about his research experience in 2013 vs. 1996.  Can you believe that in 1996, they mailed out postcards to neighborhoods to find out cicada distribution information?!  So high-tech.

Now in 2013, people can visit the RadioLab Cicada Tracker site to help with the study!  Click "See Cicadas?" to fill out a Cicada Sighting Form!  Click "Map", and you can see where the 17-year cicadas are emerging!  Also, if you're hungry.... Jenna Jadin and the University of Maryland Cicadamaniacs have made a cookbook filled with delectable recipes like cicada-rhubarb pie and chocolate covered cicadas.  Bon appetit!

10 Tips to Save Your Phone's Battery

Over the weekend, I was in a remote location in the middle of nowhere.  While there was WiFi, there was no 4G or phone service of any kind for miles.  My battery dove from 100% down to the red sliver of 1% faster than normal.  I have an iPhone, so of course if you let it die completely, it displays the plug to lightning screen and refuses to turn on for several minutes after beginning its recharge.

What Technology Will Apple Create in the Future? Apple Seeking Trademark for the Name "iWatch" in Japan

The ideas and predictions about what the watch can do remind me of the movie "The Island" (2005).  The futuristic characters scan their technologically-enhanced wrists at the cafeteria, their bodies' nutritional needs are analyzed, and their meal is prepared accordingly.

One of the things I enjoy about my inexpensive, digital watch is that it is waterproof to 15 meters.  So, a concern for me would be getting the iWatch wet and ruining it.  Also, I tend to be kind of clumsy, run into things, scratch my watch, etc.  I don't really mind parting with my $15 once every year or two to replace my scratched-up Target watch.  However, if I had a watch that cost hundreds of dollars, replacing it would be less than practical.  That being said, a watch does seem like a logical next step in technological advancements and smart devices.  Imagine we do become more like the characters in "The Island", and our watch tells us the right combination of how many Snickers bars we need to eat + how many Lady Gaga songs we need on our playlist to survive a winter expedition in Antarctica.  If the iWatch really is capable of these outrageous things, it sounds like it could be the next step in our apparent quest toward becoming a robotic species.  Hopefully it will be durable enough for everyday use, even by those who are a little less than graceful!
